And ten thousand more to go…
-James Taylor

So we biked outside today. And we have these new pedals with shoes that clip into them so you get more power on the upstroke…

I think the last time I fell off a bike, I was eight. And I was a lot closer to the ground. This is going to hurt tomorrow. More than it does already, that is. Well, off to rehearsal. And missing the swim banquet.

P.S. It would hurt less if you donated…all this would be worth it! *winks at sidebar*

Only in New York, right?

Anyway – the trip was pure fantabulosity. And, as promised, I have many pictures. Not as promised, I haven’t yet finished the raglan. But there was knitting accomplished on the trip! More on that later.

First we went to MoMa…that floor was sooo cool…

And I was easily amused in the store…

A face…on a fly swatter.

And salt and pepper shakers that WON’T fall over, no matter WHAT you do.

That night, we went to the opera. We had horrible seats though, because it’s so expensive, so the actual show wasn’t that amazing for us. Also, we got back into the hotel past midnight, and because it does take a certain amount of noise to unpack even just enough to go to bed, we got complaints about being ‘rowdy teenagers’ and crap. Ah well.

The next day, we arose bright and early and went to the Tenement Museum, which is really cool but I had already seen, so was pretty boring for me. Then we went to South Street Seaport, which was really fun. We checked out random stores, had lunch, and I found this thing:

Alethia’s hat had to be involved somehow. Here’s a movie of it:

It was sooo fun. For dinner that night, we went to Ellen’s Stardust Diner, where the waitstaff sing and jump up on tables and stuff, so that was fun. Then we went to Blue Man Group, which was AMAZING! I got my ticket autographed…

The last day, we spent the morning wandering about Manhattan, and then we went home. Here are some other pics from the wanderage:

The bottom right is actually from the opera.

And my foray into lace was a success! Here’s what I accomplished, along with some other boring and not picture-worthy knitting (yet) over many hours of bus ride. Granted, I also played MarioKart and did other less productive and wholesome things, too…

The only obscenity about this lace is that it involves knitting SEVEN stitches together at several points.

Needless to say, I’m completely exhausted, but still have to teach and then volunteer at the school auction tonight. Then tomorrow, I have an interview for a summer internship (hope I get it!!), I might go snowboarding, and then I have rehearsal for the violin improv trip I’m leaving for this Friday. Does sleep come into the picture anywhere?

P.S. My Google Reader had 56 posts when I got home, and I’m still crawling through them – so I might not have read everyone’s latest yet.

Apologies for lack of photos – my next post will (hopefully) be an FO celebration! I’m nearlynearly done with the second sleeve of the Nashua raglan, leaving only the collar and fixing the bottom left! We’re leaving on our class trip to NYC on Wednesday, and of course I’ve already decided what knitting I’m bringing, but not on minor things that the rest of my class worries about, like what the heck to wear to the opera…

But one of the projects I’m bringing is (surprisingly) a first for me! Lace! I’ve never really done a lace pattern before, and for my first endeavor, I’ve chosen the Trellis Scarf from Interweave Knits. It was really cool because I found it on Ravelry and looked through our binders of old cutout magazines patterns and we actually had it! I was almost shocked…except that my mom has bought almost every IK ever, so I guess I was more shocked that I actually found it than that we had it…

But I promise pics in the next post – NYC pics, knitting pics, etc!

P.S. – I’m almost unsick! I still have a bit of a stuffy nose and sore throat, but I’m off the regime of various drug cocktails…

I’m sick. AGAIN. All the fluey stuff was almost gone…and then I got this cold thingy, which is cough, stuffy/runny nose, headache, little fevers, and throat exploding every time I swallow. It SUCKS. So how can I still be having a good day, you ask? Well…

  • I got my SAT scores, and got a 2290! HuzZAH! I’m never taking them again!
  • This weekend is a 3-day weekend!
  • We’re closing in on 25% of our TNT fundraising goal. This is good because that means they won’t charge my mom’s credit card, but also intimidating, because it feels like we’ve done a lot of work to only be a quarter of the way there…so please donate, everybody!
  • And awesomest of all…Lime and Violet featured my Mutant Bunny Hat in a blog post! They called it ‘most fashionable bunny-featuring spring knit.’ :D This is really exciting for me, though – I mean, they’re practically famous! As evidenced by today’s blog stats…

We’ve got a spinning (like biking, not yarn) class this evening, though, which I’m NOT looking forward to, what with barely being able to breath out my nose, feeling my heartbeat pounding my ears from just walking up stairs, and my throat hurting. Urgh.

For cross training, today we did a local St. Patty’s Day (which, incidentally, is my parents’ anniversary…I should get them something…)-themed race. It was five miles, and I surprised myself by meeting my goal of finishing under an hour – 56:something! :D It was also really fun, because tons of people got really dressed up. I wish I had pictures to show…Ah well.

Anyway, whilst showering after said race, I got to pondering – the cold you feel after running in the cold (sweat + wind) is very different from the cold you feel after a shower or when you have a fever or after skiing. But, for me, anyways, if I’m hot, I’m just hot. There’s not much distinction. Just thought that was interesting.

If you’re a fan of puzzles, check out Killer Sudoku Online. You can play Killer Sudoku (a way cooler variety of the classic, in my opinion) daily, or peruse their archives, all also playable online or printable. It’s pretty sweet.

Anyways, just a quick post. I’ve got to go teach later!

Do they become disgruntled?

-joke courtesy of my friend. I thought it was funny.

Anyway, happy Pi Day, everyone! Have some pie:

Yeah, I prefer apple, too. Or carrot. But this’ll do.

Anyways…yarny stuff! An LYS is having a moving sale, and despite only intending to buy two skeins, I was coerced into buying a sweater’s worth of gorgeous Silky Wool, the color of which reminds me of the famous Tuareg of mmmmalabrigo. Doesn’t it look similar?

It was truly challenging to even begin to capture the true glory of this color. Especially when you get a sweater’s worth for under $60! AND when your mom pays because she knows you’ll let her steal it sometimes!

Also, a sleeve!

The second one is going more quickly because I’m copying my previous shaping rather than figuring it out. I’m getting pretty sick of this sweater and have sooo many cool projects lined up, that I really want to finish it soon…

Team in Training goes decently well…although we had to ask for an extension on our fundraising – 25% of the funds were supposed to be in by today, but we got a one-week extension. It’s still going to be tight if we even make it, so I again implore you or anybody you know to please donate! (Link in sidebar) We sent out about a bajillion letters and I’m selling doughnuts at school to raise money, but it’s still coming fairly slowly compared to the total whopping $9,600 we need to get in the end. I think we’re a bit over $1,000 at the moment, and we need $2,400 by next Friday. Agh!

…and not from the flu.

I feel a need to rant. About English essays. And their BS-iness. For example, take the introductory paragraph of the essay I’m currently writing:

What is noble? Webster’s dictionary provides several relevant definitions: possessing outstanding qualities, illustrious; of high birth or exalted rank; possessing, characterized by, or arising from superiority of mind or character or of ideals or morals. All three of these definitions can be applied to Hamlet. He proves himself noble many times over during the play, most notably in the final scene during which he dies.

Okay – the way I go about writing essays is the down-and-dirty practical way: I write exactly what I know the teacher wants to hear. But I can just feel that this one is going to be so full of BS that I need some kind of outlet. Over the course of this year, I’ve gotten used to writing a bunch of crap I don’t believe, handing it in, and consistently getting A’s. But usually, there’s some kernel of sanity to which I can cling. I haven’t found one this time. Because do you want to know my real opinion of Hamlet? He’s a pussy murderer from a predictable story who speaks in antiquated language and whom I am forced to read about by people who think they know what’s best for me. And no, I’m not a fan of Shakespeare. But I’m going to have to write this honeyed essay and fill two pages with such absolute BS (to my mind, anyway), and then have to deal with my teacher’s comments about how much the play has ’spoken to me’ and how ’sensitive and analytical’ a writer I am. Now, granted, clearly the situation could be worse – at least I get good grades. But it saddens me a little that I haven’t yet come up against a teacher who can see through me when I write pages and pages of crap I don’t actually think is true! Please stand by while I scream and then vomit copiously onto an Oriental rug.

Now that that’s over with…in other news, I’m nearly finished with the sleeve on the raglan and will post a horribly lopsided picture of said raglan when the sleeve is indeed finished and I am confident that I won’t rip it out yet again.

Over and out.

P.S. for anybody who knows me IRL, my English teacher is DeSantis, and he loves me and I HATE IT!

You may or may not have noticed my sidebar post about what a hectic weekend I was going to have. Well, it turned out to be only about half that hectic – I hadn’t been sick since the start of the school year, and I woke up Saturday morning (SAT day!) with a cough like somebody was rubbing sandpaper down my throat. I went and took the SAT, which was interesting since you’re not allowed to drink anything in the testing room and I kept coughing, but that was okay, and then I taught my class. By that evening, I was developing a fever, and the next day, I awoke bright and early, hoping to be well enough to go on the ski trip, but instead vomitting all over my floor before even getting out of bed!

Just a heads-up: the flu SUCKS. I stayed home from school Monday, felt like I should have Tuesday, and am finally startingto feel a bit better today, although the painful cough remains, and if I haven’t had any Advil/Tylenol/whatever, I still get the feverish chills. But at least I’m not so dizzy I think I’ll fall over every time I stand up. And my mom says we can probably ski/snowboard this weekend if the weather’s good enough to make up for missing the trip.

What I’m not looking forward to is starting to bike/go to spinning classes again – I suspect that by the time I do so, it will have been a week or more and it’s remarkable how out of shape one can get in a week…*sigh*

Oh, and check out this blog post – a blogiversary contest to post your favorite desert!

Sorry for the lack of pictures or knitting content in this post, but I barely knit while I was sick. I’m (again) almost done with the first sleeve on the Nashua sweater, although I’ve ripped it out at least three times now, so who knows if it’ll work this time…?
